The Truth About Wars

December 3, 2008

Centuries ago, war was a battle for honor and pride, countries fought each other in search of freedom, and if not for liberation, wars occurred because of greed and dominion. Wars from centuries past were fought using swords of steel and shields of wood and copper, back then it was a battle of brute strength, intelligence and bravery. Those days, the greater the cavalry, the greater the chances of being victorious, if you were a king commanding a large army, a cavalry of a thousand horsemen, they would trample your adversaries to a pulp and your swordsmen would tear the flesh of your enemies and roar! The battle cry of glory echoes through the field of war, and blood is showered upon the green grass; the victor of the war goes home wounded, but the benefits that he reaped are abundant, the people he governs are free, freedom has been earned, the victors will see the sun rise once again. Those were the days of honor for war, and since the turn of the century, war had become stained by greed, people are now suffering because of war and while these people weep, the gluttons of war yearn for more.

As known to many, war is a business nowadays; greedy people wage war to gain profit, the military flags are hoisted on the battlefield and the populace is frightened. Unlike the days of old, the insignia of today does not bring hope nor courage to the people, these military flags strike fear into the hearts of men, especially those who don’t have arms to defend themselves, people who cower and fret every time they hear a gunshot, casualties of war as they are called, innocent civilians who run for their lives every time there’s an encounter, people that are trapped in between grenade explosions, bullets and land mines. Amongst these people are innocent children, children who grew deaf and mute because of the loud and violent explosions caused by bombs. All of these things are happening right before our eyes and yet no one wants to stop it, everyday countless innocent civilians die and we yet we don’t hear their cries, and at night people sleep safe and sound while others tremble in fear while when they close their eyes. Now I understand why truth is the first casualty of war.
