The Adventurer’s Precautions
October 27, 2009
I’ve had my share of adventures. And I’ve met other adventurers as well. The one thing I noticed is that adventurers around the world have kept one rule sacred: always bring something that can easily be noticed.
Rescue seminars always talk about looking for something that stands out in the environment that you’re in. If there’s a bright orange object in the middle of a dense jungle made up of greens and browns, chances are that there’s a person in that spot. The easiest way for adventurers to achieve this basic precaution is to wear a bright jacket to their travels. However, it may not be enough especially if you’re in thick foliage or fog. The solution is to bring a few attention flags.
These flags are designed to help their carriers get the attention they need in emergency situations. They attract so much attention that even a helicopter pilot would spot it from high above even if from the corner of his eye.
The most glaring advantage that these attention flags have over the standard jacket is that they can be waved around. The human eye locks on to any sign of movement. Waving around brightly colored flags will surely get the attention of any rescue units within sight.
Once, I got lost while we were trekking through the woods. Luckily, I got out of it by getting spotted by my party. They said that the first thing they noticed was the flag that I carried. Getting noticed when it really counts can save lives.
