What’s The Big Deal with Street Banners?

The grip of advertising has been felt in many ways, it could be in billboards and custom street banners that usually take up place on the main public road or in airspace. All over the world in different cities, the response of some governing bodies and civic organizations had been different in the name of advertising. Though existing laws are in place but still, it varies on different cities.

Majority of the cities worldwide have various regulations on displaying custom street banners, they usually provide boundaries on the areas of display, length of the displaying time and the size. Governments usually get revenues on the permit fees required.

Several cities like San Francisco have a law which prohibits the advertisement of products and businesses. On the other hand, Los Angeles has been looking into creating another way of earning revenues by permitting street banners to be displayed, with an ad space that would not take up more than 20% on the banners space.

The city government of Moscow implemented to ban street banners and has set aside a specific budget to recompense the advertisers when the ban will be strictly be implemented. The custom banners will be expected to go down by August and this would mean lost jobs and lost revenue on the industry. Custom street banners were also taken down at Harpended, England because of fear in structural integrity of fixtures.

Street banners are considered to be an influential advertising tool on roads and streets particularly in traffic prone and downtown areas to gain increased chances of exposure. While rules exist in several places, some areas have no definite law for the regulation of custom street advertising and placing.

In all things, balance on city’s revenue needs and business advertising opportunities is badly needed in order to meet those in the common line. Also need to be considered are the sentiments of the constituents and civic groups on how they perceived the custom street banners. Cities will need to consider these factors and decide on how to get thru with compromises.
